Vamos! Let's Go to the Market, author Raúl the Third
This is almost a Richard Scarry-esque take on a border mercado. Little Lobo visits many different booths at the market to make deliveries and purchases. Almost everything in the illustrations is labeled in Spanish, and the text is a free-wheeling mixture of English and Spanish. Longer Spanish phrases are denoted with asterisks and have a translation right on the page, while most of the other Spanish words are covered in the glossary at the back. The artwork is fantastic -- even better than the author's previous work on Lowriders in Space -- and there's plenty here to keep readers returning again and again.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a great way to mix English and Spanish words into a story. The illustrations and layout remind me so much of reading Richard Scarry's books. I would have loved it even more if the mystery of El Toro had been included as a plot line rather than focusing only on a visit to the market. Perhaps in the sequel?
Review by Samantha Geary, McMinnville Public Library
Vamos! follows Little Lobo on his market day. Each page features heavily detailed illustrations of vendors around the marketplace. The sparse narration just hints at what's there. I noticed some play on words and felt very empowered to recognize many of the Spanish words in the story. It would make a great read for a Spanish-English bilingual family.
